How to Check Pokémon Card Prices

Whether you're trading at a local league, buying singles, or clearing out a childhood collection, checking a Pokémon card's current price is step one. Here are the two ways to do it — and when each makes sense.

Method 1: Manual price lookup

Every English Pokémon card can be pinned down by three details printed on the card itself:

With those, you can search recent sold listings on major marketplaces and compare. Cross-referencing at least two sources gives a reliable range. The catch: it takes a few minutes per card, and misidentifying the set or variant — easy with lookalike reprints — gives you the wrong price entirely. Our set number lookup guide covers the details.

Method 2: Scan the card with a price checker app

A card scanner app does the identification for you. MonZap uses image recognition to match your card against a database of thousands of Pokémon TCG cards, then displays up-to-date pricing for the exact printing — including holo and special variants. What takes minutes manually takes about a second per card.

Checking prices with MonZap

  1. Download MonZap free on the App Store.
  2. Tap scan and point your camera at the card — sleeved is fine.
  3. Read the current market value, alongside full card details.
  4. Optionally save the card to your collection to track its value over time.

When to use which method

One or two cards and no phone handy? A manual marketplace search works. A stack of pulls, a binder, or a garage-sale lot? Scanning is the only practical option — and because MonZap identifies the exact variant, it's often more accurate than a rushed manual lookup, not less.

Prices change — check before every trade

Pokémon card prices move with tournament results, reprints, and collector demand. A card priced six months ago may be far off today's market. Make a habit of scanning before you sell or trade anything of value.
