How Much Is My Pokémon Card Worth?
You just pulled a card, found an old binder, or inherited a shoebox of cards — and the first question is always the same: how much is this Pokémon card worth? The honest answer is that value ranges from a few cents to thousands of dollars, and it comes down to five factors you can check in minutes.
The 5 factors that decide a Pokémon card's value
- Set and card number. The same Pokémon appears in dozens of sets, and prices vary wildly between them. The set symbol and the number printed at the bottom of the card (e.g. 4/102) identify the exact printing.
- Rarity. The symbol next to the card number tells you the rarity tier: circle (common), diamond (uncommon), star (rare). Cards numbered above the set total (like 202/198) are secret rares — the most valuable tier.
- Finish and variant. Holo, reverse holo, full art, and special illustration cards command premiums over their non-holo versions — sometimes 10–100x.
- Edition. Early sets have 1st Edition printings marked with a stamp on the left side of the card. First Editions are dramatically scarcer and more valuable.
- Condition. Whitening on edges, scratches on the holo surface, and centering all move price. A near-mint card can be worth several times a played copy.
