Check the printing before the price

A black stamp is only one clue. The set, stamp, and Base Set artwork frame work together to separate 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited cards. Use the checker before you compare values.

Classify an English card

This checker covers standard English expansion cards. It does not authenticate a stamp, grade condition, or appraise value. If the printed clues conflict, stop before listing or buying.

Before you start Find the set with the expansion symbol and collector number. Japanese and other language printings follow different edition rules. Find the set and card number
2. Is there a black “EDITION 1” stamp?
3. Base Set only: is there a drop shadow to the right of the artwork frame?

Choose the printed clues to classify the card.

Read the Base Set evidence together

For English Base Set, the stamp and artwork-frame shadow create three normal classifications. A conflicting combination needs closer authentication.

Trainer and Energy cards do not have a Pokémon artwork frame. Use stamp placement, typography, and the copyright line, or ask a qualified authenticator.

Which English sets had 1st Edition cards?

CGC documents ten English sets with 1st Edition printings, ending with Neo Destiny. Base Set 2 was the exception during that period and did not carry the stamp. Standard English 1st Edition stamps did not continue after Neo Destiny.

A stamp on Base Set 2 or a later English expansion is a reason to verify the card—not proof of a rare printing.

Price the exact match, not the stamp alone

The checker narrows the printing. It does not produce a value. Record these details before you keep a marketplace comparison.

  1. 1

    Lock the identity

Record the set, card name, collector number, language, finish, and the printing result above.

  2. 2

    Match condition

Compare corners, edges, surface, and centering. Keep raw and graded records separate.

    Inspect condition before grading
  3. 3

    Use completed sales

Find recent sold records for the same printing and similar condition. Active asking prices show seller expectations, not a completed transaction.

  4. 4

    Keep a range

Use several matched sales and keep the low, middle, and high results. A range is evidence, not an appraisal or sale promise.
